popups must die!
Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
Are there any Popup Killers (software) for the Macintosh or for Unix?
Answer:
There are some in the making for the Mac, but none that we are aware of on the Net. A guy wrote to me once and said that he saw one a few years back, but couldn't remember the name of it. If you would like to see a Popup Killer for Macintosh developed, please contact Xavier over at xFX JumpStart Software (author of PopUp Killer) who is trying to do a port of his software to the Mac. As far as Unix goes... try checking freshmeat.net to see if there is anything you can use. Most of this stuff is for various Linux flavors, but I do beleive that there are some that do kill Popup Ads.
Question:
I have a Web page on a site that does NOT have Popup banners. But, they do have Ad Banners... how do I kill the ads?
Answer:
The name of my site is "POPUPS Must Die!" not "Ad Banners Must Die!". We do NOT officially do Ad Banners. I think most people who hang out in my forums (myself included) are hackers by nature. We like to tinker with code and find out how things work. And, while you might find some instances of people discussing how to disable ads on places like FreeServers (for example)... WE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS! We talk about it out of curiousity, or just general knowledge. But, if you write to ask me: "How do I get rid of an Ad Banner on ( Insert - Company - Name - Here )?" I will ignore you. So, if it doesn't involve Popup Ads do not expect a response from me!
Question:
If I remove the Popup Banners from ( Insert - Company - Name - Here ) can they delete my Web page?
Answer:
Yes, unfortunately they can. By removing the banners you are violating their "Terms of Service" that you agreed to when you signed up for an account. But, if you get a PERMANENT URL from a URL Redirect Service (Free from some companies like V3 URLS- http://come.to) you need not worry. Even if the Big-Bad Free Web Page Company deletes your page, you can create a new one somewhere else and then simply change the location your Virtual URL points to! This does NOT free you from the responsibility of making REGULAR BACKUPS of your work. If you didn't make a back up of your Web site and they delete it... who's fault is it? Can you get mad at them for enforcing the rules? It's a big game!
Question:
Can I use the tips on your site to create my own Anti-Popup site?
Answer:
Yes! Provided that you are original, and do not rip me off, you are more than welcome to use these tips to help other people stop Popup Ads. Please read my page entitled Stop Thief! about copying stuff. Some people like to go to "File" and choose "Save As" and copy all my files to their hard-drive and change the colors. I will never help these people, or even admit that I know them - people who do this are UN-ORIGINAL, UN-IMAGINATIVE THIEVES !!!
Question:
Can you help me get rid of the banner ads on my Free Homepage?
Answer:
No! Sorry, we only do Popup Ads. Banners, unfortunately, have become a necessary evil - they pay the bills. (see the question above)
Question:
Are you some kind of a fanatic or what!?
Answer:
Yes! Hahahahahah! Next question please....
Question:
Why don't you just disable "Active Scripting" or "Javascript" under the Explorer or Netscape options?
Answer:
Why not just watch PBS and forget about cable channels? If you disable scripting, the Popups go away, but so does everything else. Soon, you're not even viewing the Web sites the way the designers created them. So, why bother? Why not just use Lynx (a text-only Web browser) and forget the whole thing? It is unfortunate that advertisers would make you want to change and restrict your Web browsing experience to avoid seeing the Popup Ads. This is what we hate to see.
Question:
Can you help me disable Popup Ads on ( Insert - Company - Name - Here ) ??
Answer:
Unfortunately, I am only one person. If the company is not listed under our Eliminate Popups section, then I'm sorry but I can't help you personally. I do have a "fool-time" job and can only spend a few hours on the weekends maintaining this site. Try posting your request in our Forum to see if someone else has discovered a way to get rid of them on that service yet. And, definately check The Blacklist to see if they are there - if they aren't listed report them to us!
Question:
Why do you care if there are Popup ads? It's not like they are killing you or anything...
Answer:
Nothing seems so bad that we can't make it worse. I got on the Web in October of 1994. Back then there were NO ADS! None, nada, zip, zero, not even ONE! (Just a bunch of crappy gray homepages) I saw the rise of advertising on the Internet. And to tell you the truth it's only getting worse. One idiot came up with Popup ads and soon all the marketing people followed like a bunch of lemmings towards the cliff! I wouldn't be so bothered if they weren't so obtrusive! Ads in and of themselves don't even phase me. I live in America - land of opportunity and advertising. I just don't like having to STOP what I am doing and close a window, just so I can turn around and do it again 30 seconds later. It slows me down.
Question:
You say that there are several hosts which use programs to look for your solutions to destroy popups, and that by using encrypted code you can keep them from finding the anti-popup code. Isn't it only a matter of time before the hosts setup the same programs to search for for the encrypted code?
Answer:
Yes it's true. It is only a matter of time before these companies realize that we are circumventing their popup code. No matter WHAT we do, they will eventually figure it out. But, by changing the code, or encrypting it we can try to throw them off the trail for awhile. A good analogy here would be: "Radar Guns and Radar Detectors". New radar detectors come out all the time. So, to foil the detectors, the police are constantly creating new radar guns to catch the unsuspecting speeders who can't detect them. It's an ongoing game, but we always try to stay just one step ahead. ;)
Question:
Can you show me how to kill the Ad Banner on ( Insert - Company - Name - Here )?
Answer:
No. But, the words "Go f--k yourself gently with a chainsaw" do come to mind...
