Lately, I've been getting a lot of email about Freeservers Ad Banners (www.freeservers.com). If you've been by the Eliminate Popups page before, you will notice that I've removed the solution for Free servers because it no longer works. Freeservers most likely updated their code.

Freeservers does NOT have Popup ads. They have a really annoying ad banner that automatically gets put into all your pages. Since so many people have written and complained about this, I decided to have a look at their code. I signed up for a Freeservers account and messed around with their code for 4 or 5 hours. Everytime I altered their code - I would get 2 ad banners instead of one. So, the point is - they have a good "tamper-proof" script that generates the ad.

It does bother me that Freeservers does NOT let you the user decide where to put your banner. I can see making the banner required - it pays the bills for your "FREE" web space. But, they should at least let you decide where the banner resides on your homepage.

Although I couldn't come up with a way to eliminate the Freeservers banner, I was able to turn their code into plain-text and shrink it so it is very small. Then, I made the text the same color as my background. In essence, I hid the ad banner, and made it dissappear. But, this is not a very elegant solution. It doesn't really get rid of the ad banner - it merely hides it's existence. If you want to see my Freeservers page (which still does NOT have any banner on it) go here:

If anybody comes up with a REAL solution to stop the Freeservers Ad Banner, I would really like to talk to them. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! I've tried to remove the banner, but was not able to. Technically this does not fall in the realm of popup killing. But, as a community service I tried to help out. I guess I wasn't able to deliver the goods. Anyone is welcome to practice solutions on Freeservers. Just grab another email address and go sign up for a Freeservers account. Then, hack away at the code until you find a solution. If you solve it please let me know.

If you have a homepage on Freeservers and you do NOT like the ads, I would highly recommend that you take your business elsewhere. There are plenty of Free Homepage Providers out there. We have solutions to eliminate the Popup Ads on many of these. Choose a provider that we ALREADY have a solution for. Then, move your page to that server and eliminate the popup ads. But, as of August 1999 - we cannot help you eliminate the Freeservers Ad Banner.
