Delicate Delusions

I’ll paint a world where I am safe
To be idealistic and naïve
I’ll hide under my covers and life in this place
A world where you won’t have to leave

If we believe it enough the sun won’t come up
We can count the stars forever
I just want to pretend that my needing you so much
Is going to somehow keep us together

They say guard your heart, don’t get attached
Memorize your goodbye in a hurry
You’d think these circumstances would make me hold back
But emotions are just expanded by the word ‘impossibility’

I just want to pretend for as long as I can
Deep down I know we are reaching the conclusion
Eventually I’ll be left, all alone once again
Cradling these delicate delusions

All the pretty words and starry skies
Can’t keep reality from barging in
You’ll wipe the tears from my eyes
Then softly lift my chin

I have to cherish every moment left
And keep from holding you back when you walk away
I’ll kiss you now, there’s nothing to regret
And let myself dream that we’ll meet again one day
