Across the distance I can see my best friend
His features distorted and strange
I hold my hand out expecting him to jump but then
He turns his back when I scream his name
The gap expands and still I’ll wait
He’s just out of my reach on the other side
He told me once never to lose faith
But now even from far away, he can’t look me in the eyes
Between our two worlds there once was a path
A passageway for our hearts
How could our love decay so fast?
When did we drift so far apart?
I mourn over the burnt remains of our bond
And cry with the ashes of our connection
It didn’t take him very long to move on
Walking as fast as he could in the other direction
My ‘I love you’ echoes in the expanse
These words are not enough
He begged me just to take a chance
But when things got hard, he just gave up
I am alone now with the settling dust
Staring at a dream I can no longer pursue
Standing on the edge of the burning bridge between us
Watching him fade away from my view
