Shallow Grave

Cocaine shovels dirt
While heroine carves the tombstone
You wait on the edge alone
Death lurks around the corner
A fate you can no longer postpone

Your soul died long before this day
He would look at you now with disdain
Request that you no longer share his name
Your former self would shake his head, quote Jesus
And spit on the person you became

Grief and woe are out of place here
Though you’ll die believing I may regret
Cringing under your silhouette
Or casting a longing glance at a stranger
Inhaling one more cigarette

I never knew you, daddy
They say you used to smile
Happy to just to be alive
Now you stare down at a hole in the ground
Your new home in just a little while

You made a bargain with the devil
Sold your conscious for a high
Your family for a fresh supply
You run toward him with open arms
Sparing not even a glance goodbye

Rest in peace, they’ll say
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
I’ll cry with happiness
You dug this grave yourself
And now, you can’t hurt any of us

For my "father"
