A Heart's First Death

I
with bloodshot eyes and quivering lips
i pick up my pencil
and fulfill the promise i made to you

let it be known that these words are not derived
from the pain of losing you,
but the joy of knowing you

II
by some twist of fate
you confessed to loving me
and i did the same
we agreed to play love's risky game
knowing all too well
the odds were not in our favor

there is no deeper or richer connection
between two people
than a kiss
time spent with you
felt like some sweet dream
to me,
age was nothing
but a pointless number

a number, though,
that would be our downfall

III
obstacles would arise
impossible to overcome

a love fought blindly for,
fought a battle
we could never win

so tonight
we turned and went our separate ways
before the pain elevated
into something much worse
sure, we hurt now
but we saved our hearts
from a death much worse that what we feel now

we blame ourselves
and feel guilty,
feel sorry
but never should anyone be sorry
for following their heart

not to sound cliche, but
"tis better to have loved and lost,
that to have never loved at all"

no regrets Meagan

IV
let's not dwell in sorrow and remorse
but rather, remember
what joy we brought to each other's lives
and move on,
never looking back with one ounce of regret

though our connection has broken
our love will never fade
into some back pocket of time

the echo of your kiss
resounds so highly
and my lips move
sliently repeating
Romeo and Juliet...
Romeo and Juliet

i will walk to Slyvan
and under a certain tree
i will place this poem
and walk away a reborn heart

V
time will pass
tears will dry
and i'll read this poem
and look at your picture
on my knees i will fall
thanking God above
because i was truly blessed to know someone as wonderful as you Meagan
