I Love Her

Confession:
we sat talking that night
she spoke like a philosopher
explaining her goals and ambitions in life
a brief pause, i pushed her hair back
held her hand, gazed deep into her eyes
and sensing an opportunity
whispered to her "i love you"
she sat silent, looking straight through me
her teeth gently clamped on her knuckles
as she wept velvet tears
she turned away
and was swallowed by the night

i never saw her again

Renewal:
much time has passed
since i lost her
today while watching TV
i turned in my recliner to watch the snow fall
and i tried to fight it
but thoughts of her resurfaced
in my ears
"i love you" echoed over and over again
and in my eyes i could see her eyes filled with pain
soon i was crying the same velvet tears
she had cried that night

wanting her is a pain
as cold and sharp
as the winter icicles forming outside
