The Islander

i'm stranded on an island
in the middle of this ocean
your love held me afloat
your promises, never broken,
shattered
and i was thrown into dark waters
hurricane rainfalls, full force gale
crashing waves washed me ashore
and i searched for shelter within myself
on this island
million miles from anyone
the initial storm ended
but a storm continued to linger inside
the skies cleared and the horizon
stretched endlessly into a world
that didn't seem as lovely to me anymore
without you i'm so confused
i sat on the sandbar
and celebrated my self-pity and independence
a sense of freedom, so shallow
it's just another word
for having lost the one you love
i closed my eyes
and saw you standing on the mainland
more beautiful than ever
i opened my eyes
to see only miles and miles of water
in every direction

there is no beauty in the pain
of being alone
