Ponte Garibaldi, Rome

After these five generations
the castle is still topped
by its brazen guardian.

The stones have crumbled and fallen,
worn away by the defiant
ever-washing spirit of the river.

Yet you may still stand in awe
of the fortress for a little while,
bask in the protections it claims to offer:

You may still enjoy the glories
of the morning,
but it will be a hot day.
