Long Awaited Conversation

"To survive," was all she said to me.
"Just trying to stay alive
Beneath a wounded rolling stream..."

"I understand," I said.
(...I'd been locked inside the rain before.
Pounded on a blazing door
And traded in a tired horse
To swim and brave the thunder.)

"I've sung words I felt but didn't mean,
And others that I wished you'd hear,
To pull you close and draw you near
Our flame below the glowing haze."

"Surviving here on lifted ground
Is easier to do these days."
