Rendevous

Horse backlit by the stars
Fire crackling its secrets
Me in dreamy remembrance
Sleeping in the open
Under timeless ageless sky
Warmed by eternal flame
Accompanied by trusting silent companion
What makes us want to grasp
The knowledge of the stars?
What makes fires never boring
Never the same?
What makes animals such
Wise watchful companions?
Millions of fires
Millions of stars
We have sat beside fires
Under the stars since time began
Maybe we find something
Of ourselves in the other
Some of the same passion
As fire
Some of the same steadfastness
As the animals
Some of the remote consistency
Of the stars
