We kept lies in the basement
Gin in the cupboard under the stairs
And I still remember you weeping
Over faded photos and a wedding dress
Canary yellow
Stained with things other than dust and mothy mildew
(Just look at the effects of time)
While I watched Melvin,
The Siamese cat with a bad attitude,
Stalk the faintest rays of sunlight across the floor…

You pretended to be happy
Wrapped in a word of fantasy dreams; I was too naïve to care
And held my hand while we skipped to Vine’s for ice cream
(Two scoops of triple chocolate brownie in sugar cones)
While giggling about the rain as well as raising a farm full of spotted puppies
Shipped first class from the best part of Peru…

The gin disappeared and so did Melvin
The dress was ruined and the photos were burned…
Vine’s closed down
And Peru developed problems sending puppies through customs …

You stopped feigning and I started to care…
(I lost those fantasy dreams…)

We kept those lies and stained ourselves with more than dust and mothy mildew
(Blood, dirt, sins and tears…)

Just look at the effects of time…
