A Litany Before Bedtime

The shock
of Lucifer’s fall
will be just enough
to break
the ‘fancy dinner’ china
Martha’s hands
and Lazarus’s soul

God will bark orders
whilst Mary dances the broom tango
across an imitation hardwood floor

Jesus
will tuck the children
back in bed
give reassuring pats
and last sips of water

Routine?

Quite.

This is what happens
while one patiently waits for rain
in the South’s finest
harems.

Droughts can’t always be cured
