Last Breath

She was such an enchanting 5 year old
She brought the sunshine wherever she went
She was always happy rain or shine
Everyone loved her beautiful smile
She was a perfect speller and a ballerina
There was so much she still had to see
She was going to go places
And be someone
She just wanted to grow up
And be old enough to fall in love

One night in December
I went to her recital
For I knew this was important to her
And extremely vital
She danced like an angel
With the brightest wings
She had a sweet voice
She surely could sing
We left around nine
And as we drove home
She still rehearsed her favorite song
I knew God had blessed me with this little girl
She was everything to me
My day, my night
My Earth, my world

When we pulled in the driveway
She was so thrilled because her father was finally home
She ran up to him and hugged him
For her, time had seemed so long
She went to bed peacefully
And as she slept
I knew those memories inside her
Would be forever kept

The next morning I drove her
To the small school on main street
She had all her things together
She was always the one to be neat
She got out of the car
And looked both ways
How was she to know
It would be the last breath she would ever take
A car came by speeding oh so fast
All I could see was the fear she had cast
She screamed in terror as it stormed by
Leaving me screaming and running to her side

Its funny how things can happen
Right before your eyes
You lose the most special people to you in your life
I found out that the guy was eighteen and very drunk
But he had no care for my dreams were now sunk
I was without my little girl for forever all my days
Drinking and driving is never the case
Her life flashed right before her eyes
At such a quick glance
She still had so much to fulfill
But she was never even given the chance!

Note to the guests: This poem is very sad to me but it is meant to be a wakeup call to all of those who have drove drunk. You can affect many lives just by a simple action. And for all of those that have lost someone, I feel your pain. I wish you the best and may God be with you/
