To me, down in it expresses deep dark feelings about someone you care about the most..when I hear that song, I think about my six year old sister that died when I was young. down in it is the way I feel when thinking about someone I care a lot about. "kinda like a cloud up way up in the sky" "i'll cross my heart i'll hope to die...but the needle's already in my eye" those are the two lyrics that mean the most to me.

This is my favorite NIN song and by far has the most meaning in my life. It truly is a song about feeling so much for so long and loving but not getting love in return. It is essentially a loss of all feeling because of so many bad experiences with love. I have loved someone so much and not felt it in return. It is a crappy feeling and I hope no one ever has to feel it too. I have done it once, now twice, and I haven't learned. I will do it again...and I cannot handle the consequences again.

This song is about an X-girlfriend known only as "Chrissie". I'm not sure of the exact circumstances of the relationship going bad. The song is not about drugs. My theory is that he was happy (kinda like a cloud i was up way up in the sky), then everything came crashing down. I think there may have been some cheating involved or something, any way, the relationship ended badly and Trent felt like the guy he used to be had left and he was someone new.
