| I am male, 16, and have found my social life increasingly dismal over the last 6 or so years. I have friends but i only really trust 2 of them as actual friends because the other ones seem to have no problem talking about me behind my back/making fun of me around other people. I find myself doing rediculous things all to often and i dont know why. like ill make up stories completly just to have something interesting to say or ill try to throw in funny comments but they are never funny and it makes people avoid me. my quiz put me at very high on paranoid and that one that starts with an H, I have faked being sick many times for what i now realize was attention even though it is tough to admit it. I also lie rediculously often and have shoplifted things that i never actually used, just because i liked the positive attention my friends gave me and the feeling of accomplishment. please someone tell me what this is. | |

Hi aUsername, my name is mycodename. Not sure what's wrong but a personality style/disorder that begins with H is Histrionic. People with Histrionic personalities tend to crave attention. When the craving is strong enough, they are considered to have Histrionic Personality Disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR (Text Revision)is the latest version of a diagnostic manual that is used by most mental health professionals for the purpose of diagnosing people suspected of having a mental health issue. Here is a link where you can buy the manual on cd or in print. [no urls] I'm not aware of any one website that has the complete manual online but Wikipedia has numerous entries involving psychology. The Wikipedia page that describes Histrionic Personality Disorder is here. [no urls] The chronic lying and shoplifting you describe might be symptoms of a conduct disorder. [no urls] It's important that you seek counseling for these conditions as soon as possible. While your physical health is unlikely to be at risk, your mental health is equally, if not more important and this information suggests that you should find help with addressing the issues that are causing these behaviors. Histrionic Personality Disorder is often a product of the way someone is raised when younger. Unless you get counseling for it, it will likely persist into adulthood and could have significantly negative effects upon your relationships with other people. Shoplifting is something that a lot of kids your age tend to do for excitement or attention. It might stop of it's own accord but it might not. You risk arrest which will destroy your reputation and give you a juvenile police record. Behavior of this type that continues into adulthood is known as antisocial personality disorder and is often diagnosed in people with serious criminal histories. Neither of the above conditions are particularly serious when properly treated. Left untreated, they can and likely will have significantly negative effects throughout your life. If I were you, I would tell my parents and also tell your school counselor. I would start with the links above and research as much as you can on the web. If you don't feel like your getting help after talking to your parents and counselor, then you might try typing "teen hotlines" into Google. It will bring up a list of places that will likely have more resources. If worse comes to worse and you feel you are going to do something that threatens your safety or will get you in trouble with the police, then you can go to your local hospital emergency room and a doctor will probably send you to see a mental health professional. Those do cost a lot of money though which your parents might have to pay. Still, it's better than ruining your future by stealing something you don't even want. PsychForums is a website where you can talk about your problems with others having the same issues. You might try that too. Good Luck. mycodename |
