I have had BPD for almost 10 years now. When I first was dx'd with this disease, just about no one knew how to treat it. Here it is 10 years later and I still can't find a professional who knows how to treat it at least somewhat better. I've been in psych hospitals 50 times in the past 10 years. Now I don't even go anymore except if I tried to kill myself or have threatend to do it. I've read books and taught myself a lot more about BPD than the psychs I've seen have ever taught me. Not to say that some of the psychs out there can't be great, but I read that psychs don't even want more than 1 or 2 borderlines in their practice at all. We're just too hard to deal with and don't get better very fast (or at all). Right now I have a treatment team of a psychiatrist, therapist, case manager, and other people from the hospital I go to. I have been seeing all these people for about 2 years. I haven't shown any progress yet--but who knows? I'm trying not to write off the whole mental health system all together and I hope you don't. Maybe you will find a great team to work with to help you get better. That is the hope for us all. Samantha |

It's a combination of the right therapy for you and, also, the right counselor. You must completely trust who you are seeing. I found someone very good who teaches DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy). It is a different approach from the norm of counseling, and I would recommend it to anyone. I am still not perfect, but it did help me through some extremely rough times. Getting better is a slow process. Much slower than we would like. Please keep trying, Samantha. |
