"What, in your opinion, caused your fear of social situations?" I went to a small private school and was teased and bullied from the 2nd grade until the 7th. My classmates opinion of me changed in junior high, but the damage had been done. I couldn't understand why the same people who bullied me for several years suddenly stopped and became somewhat friendly in the 7th grade. I understand now, but back then, I didn't. As I began to think about that, I became very self-conscious and withdrawn - even around the people that were starting to accept me. I guess my subconscious was not going to allow me to get close to anyone and risk being hurt again. It was if a wall of fear and self-consciousness went up between me and the world. Only recntly, things have become better. |

>Schizo Girl It is no wonder that people tend to avoid their doctor, yes. The doctor I have is extremely patronizing - I will attempt to talk and become nervous causing me to stutter, and she will smirk and raise her eyebrows, which causes me to feel ashamed and embarrassed. Doctors should learn manners and how to understand the patient also, instead of only learning how to read a textbook. "What, in your opinion, caused your fear of social situations?" There are two main reasons: being verbally and physically bullied, both inside and outside school, throughout my childhood, and my step-father being attacked in the street. At thirteen, I began to fear that people would shout verbal abuse at me in the streets, or attack me, and began to become anxious in any social situation, causing me to isolate myself from others. It continued to become worse: whenever I spoke to someone, I would stutter and become flustered, I would constantly feel anxious and nauseous in social situations, and I was having an anxiety attack almost once a day. Everyone around me was convinced it was a phase/attention-seeking, so I became depressed. Almost two years later, I am recieving help. |
