Paxil was approved for treating social anxiety years ago--one of the first drugs to receive such approval, in fact. This aroused my interest, given my avoidant personality and desire to overcome my own anxieties in social settings. I'm concerned about side effects, notably weight gain and withdrawal symptoms. I've read some stories about how hard it can be to come off this drug, and people regretting going on it.

For me it would be worth the risk if it were to really help ease the social anxiety. I just wonder how it works. Some sort of utopian outcome where one magically no longer feels anxious would be wonderful, but I doubt that's how it goes. If anyone has been on Paxil, I'm curious to know what it actually changes--how does it actually help improve your situation? And is it worth it?

I have been on Paxil in the past. It did help moderately with anxiety and ocd but the side effects didn't make it worth to continue taking the medication. I'm sensitive to medication so taking 5 mg (which is the smallest dose) it "kicked down" the anxiety but it made me tired. My doctor upped the dose to 10 mg and I could hardly get out of bed, my productivity at work dropped by 70%!, I was falling asleep in meetings, and I would have visible tremors. My boss pulled me aside and thought I was an alcoholic. I went to my doctor and he told me to stop the medication. He said with the small dose I was taking I wouldn't have withdrawal...... He was wrong! It was horrible and the worse part was the doctor that prescribed the meds was a specialist and not my primary care doctor so he didn't know what was wrong with me. At the time I didn't make the connections until a couple years later that I read up on Paxil again when another doctor wanted to give it to me. So my answer to Paxil is .... stay away from it!
