The Never-Ending Marathon of Baby Care

My baby boy was born in May, about five weeks ago. Being a parent for the first time is challenging, rewarding, and full of emotional ups and downs. It's one of those things in life where you can't possibly anticipate how it will go or how you will handle it. Nothing can quite prepare you for this little person, whom you are fully responsible for, completely taking over your life.

These first five weeks have been quite a ride. One thing I did correctly predict, though, is that we--my wife and I--would settle into a routine with our baby, and we'd adjust to our new lifestyle. Babies are all about routine. It can be grueling, particularly at night, but at a certain point the challenge is mostly about running the never-ending marathon of feedings, changings, bathings and other assorted baby care.

My message to prospective first-time parents would be, don't worry so much that you won't know what to do when you get home with your baby. You'll get prepped in the hospital or by your midwife. The nuances, you'll figure out through practice. Then it's just a matter of doing it. Day after day after day. =)

But just wait until you get those first smiles... it will be worth it.
